Our Miracle Child

This is the last post on the "Believing for Aubrey" blog.  It is, however, the first post written by her mother, Ashleigh Gallo.  Please read through to the end, where Ashleigh makes a very small, but meaningful, request of all of you who have supported little Aubrey during this time.

Aubrey's Third Birthday Party
Our miracle child - Aubrey is just that!  When I describe this adventure to other people who are just finding out what happened to Aubrey, I simply cannot tell this story without talking about the healing power of God.

Aubrey has indeed made a full recovery, making it hard for most people to believe that just six months ago, Aubrey was so close to dying from a critical case of West Nile encephalitis.  But she has no evidence of brain damage, and she is thriving despite all she went through.

When she came home from the hospital, she only had two therapy appointments before it was clear she did not need any more therapy.  She was testing at or above a three-year-old level in all physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy only three weeks after she came home!  Unfortunately, she was waking several times a night, crying - but now, even that is a distant memory.  Our daughter is healed.

Dad and Mom at the Party
This week marks the six-month anniversary since she got sick, and - more importantly - it marks her third birthday. This coming Tuesday we venture to the neurologist in hopes that they will begin weaning her off the seizure medication.  Andy and I thought this milestone would be the perfect ending to her recovery updates on the blog.

I am still amazed at the number of people from all over the world who visited this blog during the first week - around 19,000!  Thousands more continued to visit afterward.

We thank each of you for praying, fighting, forwarding her story to others, and holding us up during this amazing testimony of FAITH.  We have had the remarkable opportunity to see Christ's Church in action during a tremendous trial.  Standing at her bedside in the ICU, we knew this experience would make us stronger, but we had no idea that it would be largely due to all of your prayers.

And so we say thank you for the part you played in her healing.  We know that Aubrey is marked for God's kingdom, and we look forward to seeing the godly woman she will become.

Lilly, Aubrey's Sister
We invite you all to write Aubrey a message, a prayer, or your thoughts on how her story has affected your life. We are going to leave the blog up for two weeks so you have time to write.  Afterward, we will be printing out this entire blog and all your messages into a book for her to have when she is older.

Psalm 91 was given to us by a number of you.  It became a our prayer during this journey, and it is a testimony of what God can do.

Please take a moment to read through it and be encouraged.

3 Surely he will save you

4 He will cover you with his feathers,

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,

8 You will only observe with your eyes

11 For he will command his angels concerning you

16 With long life I will satisfy him

  1. Aubrey, you own a piece of real estate in my heart, and it's always going to be yours. I'm honored to have fought alongside you in prayer during this horrible experience you went through. You are a miracle, and you always will be. I love you.

  2. Aubrey, I learned of your illness through a man who went to school with my son. I never ceased to be amazed by the power of prayer and our Lord. You are a walking miracle and through this blog I have gained strength in my own life with a family member who is gravely ill. May you have a happy life, full of love and laughter. God bless you and keep His hand on you. Be happy. Blessings to you, always.

  3. Aubrey,
You are blessed of the Lord. Always remember that the Lord has a Special Call on your life and He held on to you very tightly as the enemy, the devil, tried his best to destroy. An Army of Saints throughout the world stood in the gap for your safety and complete healing. Always remember that you have a destiny and nothing can separate you from the Love of God, that Jesus Christ died for you and rose from the dead in order to give you eternal life. Be sure to always give God the glory for your healing and know that your life is a testimony to God's healing for today and His special love for you.

  4. Dearest Aubrey:

HAPPY 3RD BIRTHDAY AUBREY. . .As you read this note from a complete stranger from Southern California (near Disneyland) please know you are not a stranger to me. The story of your illness was sent to me from a wonderful young lady who knows your mom and dad (Whitney Porter). Whitney's mom is one of my best friends. When I read your story, I knew that I would join with hundreds, possibly thousands of other people to pray for your healing. Every email update I received, I prayed for. Every detail of your illness was lifted to the Lord. Once your healing began, I would purposefully go to my computer often throughout the day to read of the daily miracles that God was performing on your behalf. I know your story touched many lives and I am sure there were many people that came to know the Lord because of you.

I had the opportunity to meet your mom, quite by accident, when I was visiting my girlfriend in Virginia. We came into Washington D.C. to attend church with her daughter Whitney, and your mom was there with your sister Lilly. I have to admit that I was very moved when I was introduced to your mom. I felt like she was a part of me, even though I had never met her before.

Aubrey, you made me believe in miracles again. The bible is full of miracles, but when we experience an amazing miracle like yours today. . .it is impossible to deny Jesus. Your story was an inspiration for me during a very dark and difficult time in my own life. God showed me that no matter how things may appear, or how uncertain our future. . .He is always with us and will never leave nor forsake us.

I pray your life will always reflect your love for Jesus. Aubrey, He has truly given you more than most people experience in their entire lives. You are God's beautiful miracle. God Bless you and your family.

  5. She is, indeed, a "Miracle Child"!!!
When we first heard about her ordeal, many of us here on the Outer Banks were deeply touched, and a lot of people who had never met her, let alone her family, were sending prayers her way.
In this day and age, with so much turmoil all over the world, it is reassuring that miracles can, and DO, happen.
Wishing all of you continued health and God's blessing ...

  6. I was honored to be among the hundreds of believers who prayed for Aubrey last fall. Not only has it been a faith challenge - but more importantly - a faith BUILDER. We love your whole family and are so thankful to be part of your lives.

  7. Aubrey, when I go over to your house to hang out with your Mom and Dad, it's hard to get a word in edgewise, because you seriously talk my ear off about jumping up and reaching the ceiling light, or about the stairs, or about your princess apparel. When I look at that picture of you in the ICU, I can barely comprehend it; God has brought you back to life. Somehow, in the process, he also gave you verbal super-powers. Laura, Gus, Sam, Olivia and I are very grateful to have been able to pray for your recovery, and we are really glad to be friends with you.

  8. Aubrey - your story reminded me how great our God is and how thankful I am. As many others have shared, I prayed for your healing and strenghth for your family. As a mother of five little girls, one very close to your age, your struggle surged me with a great deal of fear. This was not a fear of health, or circumstance, but a fear that I do not fully appreciate and enjoy each day and all that the Lord has blessed me with. Through your family's struggle I found myself deeper in prayer and thanksgiving. God has used you in your infancy, and I believe, if you let Him have continued control of you life, you will experience more blessing and miracles.
    May God continue to bless!

I learned of your story on a website online called "Facebook." I have no idea who I know that knows your family but that doesnt matter.

My faith was refreshed in reading of your illness, struggles and finally your healing each step of the way. Tears of sorrow came to me every time I would learn what you and your family were going through and finally tears of joy when you were later healed.

I am so glad to have witnessed this and pray for you through it all. My 3-year-old boy, Tanner, was also very concerned for you when I told him that a little girl named Aubrey needed prayers. We prayed for you every night and at each meal, he never let me forget ;0)

Gods power has done wonders for you and I pray that you continue to lean on him throughout your life. I am blessed to witness his healing power in you and be able to share it with my son in his growing faith.

    With continued prayers from Michigan.

  10. Aubrey, you are truly a miracle child and it was such a joy to pray for you. Your parents' friend, Becca, asked us to pray for you, which we started doing immediately. I thank your parents for allowing us to journey with you through this process. Please believe the words that your parents and so many are saying: God has His hand on you and if you will trust Him and follow Him in obedience, you will find that He will meet, fill, and exceed your desires. Believe that you are His beloved princess; He chose you before the beginning of time for a specific purpose. Seek Him and He will reveal His purposes for you in time. One of the reasons why I know what I've written is true is because I've seen it revealed in my life and especially in my oldest daughter, who was in a horrific car accident when she was seven and experienced a depressed skull fracture. Everyone who came to visit her told her that God must have a special purpose for her surviving and thriving (no issues post surgery!) and she believed them. Those words are part of her testimony and she clung to them absolutely, which is part of why I believe she has such a unique and amazing walk with the Lord. Her life is not perfect but her confidence in Him is rock-solid. I will be praying that God will use this experience to anchor you in Him so that no matter what comes at you, you will know that you are safely hidden in His hand and that He loves you passionately. Seek Him, love Him, and follow Him; He is more than worthy of the journey. You are a much loved for and prayed for child.

  12. Hello Aubrey,

You probably won't remember us, but your life and family impacted us during our short-term stay in Washington, D.C. (October through January). It was heartening to hear the stories of Provision and witness your Mommy and Daddy's continued faith, courage, and commitment to each other throughout the process of your healing. God has a very special plan for your life, and this story will be something your family will always have as a "Remember when...and God..." testimony.

May you draw closer to Him, your Rescue, your Joy, all the days of your life. May you never know a day apart from Him.

    Love,

  13. Aubrey,
I learned of your story from a high school friend, Emily Martin, as she posted this blog on facebook. Your story is a wonderful story of how God works miracles, and I pray that in your lifetime you will not be afraid to tell your miraculous story...and give God ALL the glory! I have a 33 year old brother who also is a miracle, as he survived a train accident in 2007. Through the scary, life-threatening days and months after his accident, my family also learned of God's amazing sovereignty. I will never forget your Aunt Lauren's post about God's sovereignty. Her words hit very close to home, and put me in awe of God's sovereignty and absolute LOVE for each one of us. Never forget God's love for you, Aubrey, as He lovingly worked a miracle in your life for a reason.

  16. Aubrey,

We had the wonderful pleasure of getting to know you and your family while you lived in El Paso. You were born just a few weeks apart from our first child Alana and the two of you were great friends. We had the chance to share many wonderful days at the pool and our families spent numerous afternoons & evenings together enjoying great company!! When you fell ill Alana had a very hard time understanding what was going on. She became quite upset when I attempted to explain that you needed our prayers and kept asking "Why Aubrey sick?". We prayed every night for your quick and complete recovery and asked God to restore your beautiful spirit and smile. Alana prayed every night that you would be healed so you could go outside to play with Lilly and swim in the pool. I think these were her favorite memories of her time with you!! We reached out to many people (those who knew you and many who did not) to join us in prayer for your recovery. God is so good and our prayers were answered!! I cannot explain how happy we are to hear that you have been restored. God is faithful and his love for you in never ending! I thought of your family often over the last month as I planned for Alana's third birthday, I knew your family must be rejoicing and planning your birthday as well. You are a miracle! Thank you for touching our lives and our hearts :). All our love - The Garcia Family

  17. Dear Aubrey, I have never communicated with you until now. I have sat in the background offering prayers and requests before God on your behalf amazed at the courage of your parents and grandparents. Your most difficult journey has been an encouragement and faith building part of my life in what God is doing. Every message I received prompted me to consider the the loving kindness and care the Lord has for us. That has made me grow in His mercy and grace.

    Thank you......John Kaminski

  19. Dear Aubrey, It has been a privilege to hear your story and to pray alongside so many others as you and your family have walked through this experience. In a world of so much pessimism, it has been truly uplifting and inspiring to watch God heal you. Your life reminds me that God has the power to do anything He wants, and I am so happy that it was His will to bring you back from what seemed like a terrible situation. He has great plans for you, Aubrey. I pray you'll always know that you are a miracle in many, many ways, and that God treasures you as His precious princess.

  20. Dear Aubrey,

I'll never forget the two months I spent staying with your family in the summer of 2010. You were so full of life and never failed to brighten my day. I was shocked by the news of your sudden illness and will never forget my first visit to see you in the hospital. I couldn't help but cry as I sat with your dad and grandfather watching you struggle so badly.

I'm so happy that we got our fun, full of life Aubrey back. The world just wouldn't be the same without your smile and nonstop chatter. You are an answer to countless prayers lifted up around the world. Never forget how much you are loved!

  23. Dear Aubrey,

I know your Dad, Mom, Aunt Lauren, Grandma and Granddad Gallo. I have met you at our church in Suffolk, VA. when you would visit Grandma and Granddad Gallo. You are a very precious little girl and so dear to all your family. When I heard at Village Christian Church about how sick you were we began praying immediately. I also have a granddaughter who is your age and so I really identified with the situation. I followed the blog for steady reports and cried many tears to the Lord in prayer over you. You got in my heart honey and I would not stop praying night or day. At my work in Newport News, VA we would gather to pray every morning before the store would open and all the employees would ask about you and want a daily update on how the family was doing. Much rejoicing has been heard in heaven and glory given to our Lord Jesus for healing your body and restoring you to full health. The Lord has much ahead for you in your life. Your story has touched many people around the world for Christ and the wonderful words of family and friends have allowed us to see how God uses very difficult situations for Him. Glory to God!

Dear Aubrey ~ We have known your Dad and Mom for many years, and even though we have not had the pleasure of meeting you in person yet, we've been following your story closely for the last several months and praying daily for all of you. We are so incredibly happy to know that you have recovered from this terribly unfortunate incident. For those in this world who have been through experiences that sometimes shake their faith, or make them question why certain things come to pass, your story is an inspiration. Your very being is proof that miracles do happen and that God is ever present in our lives. We look forward to hearing about all of the wonderful adventures you and your siblings will have in the future as these recent dark times fade to a distant memory. God bless you and your family!

  27. Happy Birthday, sweet Aubrey! :) It brings tears of joy to my eyes to see the pictures of you celebrating your special day. I learned of your illness through one of my close friends who attends church with your family. Instantly, I felt the connection that I shared with your family as we both belong to God's family. Even though I had never met you and probably never will, I felt a constant prompting through your entire experience to bring you before our Father in prayer, believing. Your story was an incredible testimony to God's power and how He moves when he hears His children pray. I pray God's blessing over your precious life-what a gift every day truly is!

  28. Hello,

My name is Amy Kaminski and I am the sunday school teacher for the 5 & 6 year olds at Village Christian Fellowship in Suffolk, VA. During the time Aubrey was sick, our little class diligently prayed for her healing. Having only 3 little people in the class, they are learning to pray out loud together and one at a time. As simple as this sounds, it is quite the challenge for them to sit and wait on the Lord to prompt their little minds and hearts to pray for someone. Some days you can hear the crickets churpping, however without fail one of the three would pipe up and pray for Aubrey. You can imagine the excitement and joy that these 3 had when they found out the good news of Aubrey's healing! To date we have seen God's provision of a new car, an elderly lady in our church to get well, and Aubrey's total healing and recovery. Thanks for making your request known and allowing the three little warriors in Suffolk, VA to talk to God and watch Him work. His love truly is amazing!

  29. Dear Aubrey

I’m not quite sure at what age you will be reading this, so I find myself in a bit of a quandary on what to say. I watched God move miraculously throughout the time you were hospitalized. While I’m sure it was a faith building experience for many of us during that time, it was definitely a moving faith experience for me, one that I believe turned my life towards a closer walk with Jesus. It caused me to pray more, and as a result, see God move in other situations as well. When you hear stories of that time, think of God’s goodness and his ability to act on our behalf.

  31. Dear Aubrey,

You occupy a special place in my heart, partly due to my occupying a place in yours. The many hours at your bedside and before the throne of grace in prayer were agonizing, but I would not exchange them for any other time. Our God has been faithful to you in rescuing you from the fowler's snare, and surely has a great plan for your life.

I look forward to the day that this realization comes upon you and you eagerly seek to walk out this plan in your ultimate Father's Hand.

    Love,
    Papa

  32. Dear Aubrey,

Papa said it well. Those hours and weeks were agonizing, especially for your parents. During your illness, there were many moments of despair for all of us. But our God is so loving, faithful, and good to us, even when we don't see it or understand it.

Never forget that God is good, even when all seems against you and you cannot imagine enduring another trial or heartache. Always remember that Jesus endured more than we can imagine, and He is able to sympathize with our weaknesses. (Hebrews 4:5). He never asks us to walk through a trial that has not first gone through His hands, and He will never leave us or forsake us.

Whenever you feel that there is no hope, always run to God's promises and meditate on His character. (Psalm 42-43)

I will never know exactly why God allowed you to become so sick, but I do know that because of your illness, my great God is even greater in my eyes. I love Him more than ever. I love you, too.

    Love Always,
    Aunt Loo

  35. I think that everything said made a lot of sense.
However, consider this, suppose you were to
create a killer post title? I ain't suggesting your information is not solid, but what if you added a post title to maybe get a person's attention?
I mean "Our Miracle Child" is a little boring.
You should look at Yahoo's home page and see how they create article titles to grab viewers to click. You might try adding a video or a related picture or two to get people excited about everything've
got to say. In my opinion, it might make your posts a little livelier.
